It may be that it's simple to create scenery for X-Plane I've looked for existing scenery tutorials, and while they're not too bad, they're still far from what we need to let anyone easily go to an airport they're familiar with, make some changes or additions to runways, taxiways, or aprons, add buildings, move a wind sock or beacon, add some ground scenery. Rather, it's the lack of a straightforward - or seemingly straightforward - method of doing it. It's a shame that no-one has published add-on object libraries for X-Plane.įor me, it's not at all a question of grasping how powerful library export might be, or an unwillingness to "investigate" the possibilities of scenery design. Also, there are 3rd-party add-on object libraries available. MSFS's built-in object library is much larger than X-Plane's - around 3500 objects in FSX.

Some of the MSFS editors show you a preview picture of an object. I'm not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing. I understand that the MSFS editors place objects into MSFS while it is running. They are both visual editors and both allow you to use library objects. OverlayEditor was partly inspired by EZ-Scenery and similar programs like ObPlacer. OverlayEditor is a visual editor - have you used it? a comprehensive library attached to a visual editor. Just ranting around while I paint the house and think about this stuff.įor scenery, if you look at a program like Abacus' EZ-Scenery (, and never minding the Spongebob-esqueness of the packaging), well, THAT is what we need for X-Plane. Sure - there are other things, such as AI Traffic and enhanced ATC, but I think allowing users to create real-world, correct airfields and surroundings may be one of the most important things to enable. I know these things are available in bits and pieces, but I believe that if airports and surrounding cities began to shed their generic front and really become believable as -places-, it would go FAR to make converts out of die-hard FS users. Looking into how to correct it (taxidraw) seems straightforward enough - but when I get to adding buildings (overlay manager?) things seem to go south a bit.įor scenery, if you look at a program like Abacus' EZ-Scenery (, and never minding the Spongebob-esqueness of the packaging), well, THAT is what we need for X-Plane. not a building in sight) but the taxiway is incorrect, as well as the beacon and glideslope lights. However, I notice a -distinct- lack of detail in general airports my local, KVAY, is not only sparse (desolate, actually. I can't max everything out (even with my souped-up graphics card) but it's still really, really good.
